  1. NGC6946 is a large spiral galaxy easily 
  2. viewed in the same field with the open 
  3. cluster NGC6939. The galaxy has a fairly
  4. low surface brightness, so the central
  5. core is usually the only part seen 
  6. visually. For a time it was felt that this
  7. was a member of our "local group" of 
  8. galaxies, but now it is placed just 
  9. beyond the group. NGC6946 is also known
  10. for a large number of supernova, 
  11. appearing in 1917, 1939, 1948 and 1968.
