- NGC6946 is a large spiral galaxy easily
- viewed in the same field with the open
- cluster NGC6939. The galaxy has a fairly
- low surface brightness, so the central
- core is usually the only part seen
- visually. For a time it was felt that this
- was a member of our "local group" of
- galaxies, but now it is placed just
- beyond the group. NGC6946 is also known
- for a large number of supernova,
- appearing in 1917, 1939, 1948 and 1968.
